About me:

I am a highly experienced intellectual property attorney with a broad palette of experience: from major record and music publishing company business affairs, to digital media, copyright policy and legislation, through general counsel duties and all the way to cutting-edge AI issues. I provide consulting services to internet-based, new-media companies and AI start-ups, as well as more traditional record labels, songwriters, music publishers, record producers and artists. Previously, I have served as a Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs at Universal Music Group, as the Executive Director and General Counsel of the Digital Media Association (“DiMA”), the Washington, D.C. trade organization that represents digital media companies including Apple’s iTunes, Amazon, Google/YouTube, Microsoft, Rhapsody, Rhapsody, Live 365 and many others, and in private practice representing songwriters, producers and small record labels, as well as music instrument manufacturers.

At DiMA, I was responsible for all aspects of the association’s business, from overseeing legislative and lobbying efforts, to membership recruitment and administrative matters, as well as a full gamut of G.C. duties including human resources and staffing, real estate transactions. I provided my expertise in the negotiations and arbitrations associated with sound recording and musical composition royalty rates in the United States and internationally.

Prior to joining DiMA, I served as a Business & Legal Affairs Executive at several major record companies including EMI, BMG and Polygram - and also at Sanctuary Records, a large independent “360˚” company that provided management, production, recording, distribution and other services to artists. My early legal career included associate attorney positions representing artists, musical instrument manufacturers and small record and production companies, drafting agreements, handling copyright and trademark matters and also handling civil litigation.

My Vision and My Mission

I want to provide individuals and organizations the type of clear guidance they need to be able to navigate the rapidly-evolving technical, legal and policy landscape so that they can make the best, most informed decisions they can, about how to not only survive, but how to thrive in the world that is developing. That's why I take a lot of time and care to stay on top of all of the previously-existing business models and how emerging technology impacts those businesses.in getting to know our clients from the moment they reach out to us and ask for our help.

I'm on a mission to be truly involved in helping develop the way these businesses work, moving forward. Rather than offering static, historical and biased perspectives, I am able to offer a holistic view of entire technology and IP landscape and offer real, valuable guidance, accordingly.
